Chutzpah! was originally Tiannan, a vernacular literary magazine
founded by Guangdong Vernacular Artists’ Association, debuted in 1982. In 2005
Modern Media Group purchased the magazine and changed its nature to a book
review magazine, renaming it Modern Boo Review. In 2011, it was again renamed
Chutzpah! and transformed into a new literary bimonthly. Chutzpah, pronounced ['khutspə], is a Yiddish word that originally
means "insolence”
and "impertinence." It developed the meaning of “audacity” and “utter
nerve” after it came to the English world. The modern English usage of the word
has taken on a broader meaning, referring to the actions that are innovative
and groundbreaking, and is popularized by media, literature and film. Chutzpah!
and Tiannan constitute the Chinese and English titles of the magazine, and
define the outer image and inner spirit of it.
China’s
magazine and publishing market is filled with products of various sorts and
qualities. They either are chasing after ephemeral fashion, satiating
fast-food-like reading experience, or indulging in narcissistic ivory towers,
being overserious and uninteresting. Fashion magazines seek after visual
effects, stuffing rumpus of images with shallow writings and expired styles,
while literary or intellectual magazines restrict themselves within the outdated
editing frameworks, and are hard to attract readers. There lacks a magazine
that provides in-depth reading and pleasant visual experience at the same time—Chutzpah!
aims to fill up this gap, exploring new ideas and forms of a literary magazine,
and to reconstruct a modern literary reading experience of today.
Chutzpah!’s domestic serial number in PRC is CN 44-1181/I, and the International Standard
Serial Number is ISSN1004-6399. The size of the magazine is 185mm X 230mm, each
issue runs for more than 260 pages, partially printed in color. Each issue
contains a “parasite” of selected English translations of the content.
Chutzpah! releases on the 1st of the month once every two months,
domestically and internationally, and is available in bookstores and at
newsstands. The hardcopy of the magazine features in-depth reading experience,
and the accompanying website (www.chutzpahmagazine.com.cn)
is an online space reacting to domestic and international literary news, and an
open forum for the authors, editors and readers. The bimonthly cycle of the
magazine makes it impossible to instantaneously capture the happenings in the
literary world, and the website strives to provide real-time information,
featuring different contents from the magazine, with weekly, even daily,
updates.
